My computer corrupted my USB memory key…

… which contained my assignment (due next Tuesday) and all my church stuff.

Sad.

Thankfully, the following happened:

  • I conveniently kept a backup of my assignment on my work computer—-meaning that I only lost two paragraphs;
  • It was a software failure (i.e. Windows not writing the FAT properly) rather than a hardware failure, so it’s almost fully recoverable;
  • I was able to recover about 95% of all the data I had using FAT Recovery, although it costed me about AUD 100.

Lessons learnt:

  • Keeping backups is a good thing—-we call it operational risk management;
  • Don’t use Windows, but I still do;
  • Don’t use generic USB memory keys—-they tend to deterioriate so that Windows make the errors.

I think.
